Academic Support - Program of Peer tutor

Program of Peer tutor

Academic Advising Center offers the PPT to all students who need academic support, particularly those under academic probation or at-risk.

The list of courses included in PPT is based on requests made by students who are under academic probation, regular students, or those at-risk on the webpage of AAC. Other students can view the list of courses offered this semester on the canter’s page on the university website or by visiting the AAC.

Basic or introductory courses, typically taken by students in their first year of study, will be automatically included in the list of peer tutor courses. Providing strong support in these early courses is essential, as it plays a significant role in shaping student performance throughout their academic journey. By offering peer tutoring in these foundational courses, AAC aim to help students build a solid academic foundation and enhance their success early in their studies. Students can register for the required courses at any time during the semester, and there is no limit to the number of courses they can register for, or the number of students who may attend.

AAC sends announcements to all students interested in joining the PPT to become a peer tutor throughout the semester, based on the students' requests for available courses.

PPT can be offered for students in groups or as an individual as follows.

- Peer Tutor Program for Groups: Courses offered each semester are determined based on student requests and are managed by Peer Tutor who have received official approval from the Academic Advising Center. These sessions include at least two students in addition to the Peer Tutor.

- Peer Tutor Program for Individuals: This program targets a specific number of courses aimed primarily at students who need individual academic support and have special requirements (e.g., a GPA below 1.00 or students with special needs). Meetings between the student and the Peer Tutor are scheduled based on the student's needs, with a maximum duration of one hour per week.

Peer Tutor Program sessions are primarily held in a dedicated room called the Academic Support Hall, located on the second floor of the Syed Abdullah bin Hamed AL Busaidi Learning Resources Center. Peer Tutor has the option to conduct the sessions face-to-face in the Academic Support Hall, or in the classroom, or online via Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp groups. Additionally, sessions for female students can also be conducted in study rooms in the female student dorms. Sessions can be held once a week for two hours or twice a week for one hour each. Additional sessions may be scheduled before exams. The completed list of courses is sent via email to all students and is published on the Academic Advising Centre’s webpage on the ASU website. Attendance at these sessions is not mandatory on a weekly basis; students have the right to choose which courses they wish to attend according to their academic needs. All attending students are expected to prepare and review their class notes and write down any unclear questions or concepts before attending the sessions. Students are expected to attend Peer Tutor sessions weekly throughout the semester to understand the material and prepare questions for the Peer Tutor to address. Each weekly session builds on previous ones to create a cohesive learning environment. Students should be responsible and communicate with the Peer Tutor if they need help or miss a session.
